Healthy gums start below the surface.

Deep Cleaning Explained.

Scaling and root planing is a specialized, non-surgical deep-cleaning procedure designed to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that have accumulated below your gumline. While regular dental cleanings focus on the surfaces of your teeth, this treatment targets the deeper pockets where brushing and flossing can’t reach.

During scaling, we remove hardened deposits from tooth surfaces and gum pockets. Root planing then smoothens the roots, helping your gums reattach firmly to your teeth and preventing bacteria from settling again. This procedure not only treats early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) but can also halt the progression of periodontitis—protecting your natural teeth for years to come.

Healthier gums, fresher breath.

Why It Matters?

The benefits of scaling and root planing go far beyond cleaner teeth. By removing bacteria and plaque buildup beneath the gums, this treatment prevents gum inflammation and bone loss—two key causes of tooth loss. It’s one of the most effective ways to stop gum disease from advancing without surgery.

Patients often notice fresher breath, reduced bleeding while brushing, and a smoother, cleaner feel to their teeth. Over time, healthier gums support stronger teeth and an overall brighter smile. Think of it as preventive maintenance for your mouth—keeping everything structurally sound and comfortably clean.

What to Expect

Our Step-by-Step Approach.

Every visit to Prime Dental follows a proven, patient-friendly process designed for your comfort and complete care.

Check & Diagnose

We start by examining your gums using digital imaging and periodontal probing to detect any pockets or signs of infection. This helps us tailor the treatment to your specific needs.

Scale & Clean

Using ultrasonic and manual instruments, we gently remove plaque and tartar buildup from above and below the gumline. This clears away harmful bacteria that cause inflammation.

Smooth & Heal

We then smooth the roots of your teeth, eliminating rough spots where bacteria can hide. This step helps your gums heal and reattach securely to your teeth.

Flexible Payment & Insurance Options

Get the care you need without the stress. Prime Dental accepts Cherry, CareCredit, and Sunbit, making it easy to pay over time while keeping your smile healthy and worry-free.

Your Questions, Answered

Frequently Asked Questions.

Still curious about this treatment? Here are some of the most common questions our patients ask — and our honest, straightforward answers.

Is scaling and root planing painful?

You may feel mild discomfort during the procedure, but we typically use local anesthesia to numb the area for a pain-free experience. After treatment, you might experience slight sensitivity for a few days, which subsides quickly.

If you experience bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, or loose teeth, you may have gum disease requiring deep cleaning. A dental exam with probing depth measurement will confirm it.

Depending on the severity of gum disease, it may take one or two visits to complete the treatment. Each session usually lasts 45–90 minutes.

You might notice minor soreness or sensitivity, but your gums will begin to heal and tighten within a few days. Proper brushing, flossing, and follow-up cleanings will maintain your results.

If you maintain excellent oral hygiene and schedule regular dental checkups, you may not need it again soon. However, patients with a history of gum disease should get professional cleanings every 3–4 months to prevent recurrence.
