All About Excisional and Incisional Biopsies

Any discussions about excisional and incisional biopsy cannot proceed without starting with an oral biopsy. To be more specific, we need to start with biopsy in general.

Generally speaking, a biopsy is a process that is done in order to remove a small tissue from a particular part of the body. This small tissue will then be subjected to careful study under a microscope.

A biopsy can be done on any body tissue type. The tissues found in the oral cavity certainly fall under that category, thus the oral biopsy. It’s also worth adding that there are plenty of potential diseases found in the oral cavity.

The Process Involved in a Biopsy

So how is a biopsy done? It’s usually performed under local anesthesia. The anesthesia is going to be injected into the area to get it numb. Even though the biopsy isn’t going to cause pain, it will leave a hole that will likely need some stitching. The stitches will probably last around a couple of weeks.

How long will the entire process take? The biopsy will only take about 15 minutes. There will probably be a bit of bleeding but only for a while. Should the bleeding persist even after you’ve gone home, just apply some pressure for the next 10 minutes. Use a swab or a rolled-up piece of soft cloth for the purpose.

If the mass turns out to be cancerous, then further surgery might be needed to remove it. It might also require the services of an oral surgeon as a dentist might not be able to handle such cases.

Difference Between Excisional and Incisional Biopsy

Excisional biopsy is a process where a lesion or mass is completely removed so it can be subjected to testing. There are other reasons to perform an excisional biopsy, such as aesthetic and functional reasons. Before it can be performed, several considerations need to be made. Some of those factors include size, accessibility, and the lesion’s regional anatomy.

Incisional biopsy, on the other hand, is a procedure where only a small part of the lesion is removed. This small piece of tissue will then be used to help confirm a diagnosis. One thing that needs to be said about it though is that its accuracy is considered relative. The fact that incisional biopsy only allows for testing part of the lesion is the main reason.
